This was a poster I did for Horrorhound Magazine's 20th issue where they counted down the top 20 horror films of the past decade. I suggested I do a sort Alex Ross' Kingdom Come style pull out poster with 50 characters from horror films from 2000-2009. They ended up using it as the cover and also as a pull out poster inside. A lot of work, but fun.
Wow, I'm not surprised this was hard work! It's freaking amazing. Did you just do the sections of the characters you can see? Or did you actually draw full-body images of each one and then layer them on top of each other? Also, I have no idea who some of them are. Which one is your favourite though? Or your top 5? Because I love it. Plus, is that a tentacle I can see through their legs?!
thanks. No full body drawings--that would have taken forever...lol. Here is who they are from left to right at the bottom to top: Trick r Treat, The Ring, Shaun of the Dead, Saw, Jeepers Creepers, The Grudge, The Descent, Let the Right One in, Devil's Backbone, American Psycho, House of 1000 Corpses, Halloween, High Tension, Devil's Rejects, Hostel, Underworld, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Sweeney Todd, Friday the 13th, Resident Evil, The Strangers, Land of the Dead, Behind the Mask, Death Proof, Planet Terror, The Grudge, Fido, Repo: The Genetic Opera, Bubba Ho-Tep, Drag me to Hell, 30 Days of Night, Slither, Hatchet, My Bloody Valentine, The Hills Have Eyes, May, Midnight Meat Train, Pan's Labyrinth and Dog Soldiers. Some of the top films in the mag aren't represented here because the characters weren't iconic enough. The tentacle I drew in there is actually something I decided not to finish which was I was thinking about drawing Cloverfield behind them all but didn't have the room so I just put it in the negative spaces to fill it up. As far as my favorite 5 in this drawing: High Tension, Shaun of the Dead, Trick r Treat, The Descent and The Hills Have Eyes.
Oh yeah, it was a very long process. Moreso because I just got tired of doing it and would take baby steps doing it. An hour here, stop, wait a day or two, then another hour here. Because it was going to be a cover for their special 20th issue, I knew I had to do a good job on it. I wanted people to really like it.
